Last March or so I noticed my pump took longer to shut off after use, then it seemed to fix itself until a few weeks ago. Before I could take a shower and be about half dry when it went off, now I am dry, fully clothed and it still is on for a few minutes. I have a jet with a deep well and a small Flotec pressure tank. Do not know the age of any of this. I have lived here 4 years. I did the valve check on the tank and a strong burst of air came out, no water. There are no noticeable leaks and the pressure is good and steady. Is this even a problem? Any thoughts from the experts would be appreciated. Thanks.

It could be the pump is wearing out.

But with the symptom of it fixing itself, it also could be the well running low on water.

Or, perhaps a leak... does your pressure gauge go down when you are not using water?

No, the pressure is steady. Forgot to mention the water here is very rusty, could that have anything to do with it? Thanks for your help.

Yes that helps, your jet could be partially blocked. Hate to tell you but it's probably time to call a well man.

Thanks so much for your assistance. Can the pump be cleaned or will I probably need a new one? I like to be armed with as much information as possible before I call the expensive well guys.

Jets don't partially plug.

If you thing the well guys are expensive, try calling a plumber.

Out here in the boonies of Iowa, the well guys are twice the hourly rate of plumbers, but I haven't found a plumber who will work on it. So you say jets don't partially block, what do you think it is?

Jets do partially block, then they completely block.

Can you pull the well jet by yourself or with a couple of friends, I suggest you do so to see if maybe the jet is in sand, or sand has gotten sucked up into the impeller of the pump and worn out the impeller.

Or if just the jet is partially blocked.

Do you know how deep it is, what is it hung on?

Thanks Cowrancher for all your input, but now you are getting too technical for me. I will find a plumber/well guy to look and fix it. This site has been a great help.

Rancher has gotten too technical for himself. He doesn't have a clue how jets work. He's an electrical engineer not a mechanical engineer and he has absolutely no experience with water well systems beside what he has learned here.

Just got my pump fixed by a local plumber. The pressure setting was wrong, 30-50, reset to 20-40. Works perfectly now.

No... not exactly, it works now because he lowered the pressure range, he fixed the symptom, but not the problem, I suspect the pump is on it's last legs and will need replacing.

Yes, he explained all that to me and said it could possibly be set at 35 but it will have to be replaced, sooner rather than later. If I can just make it through the winter

Thank you for getting back to us Mommabear, I just wanted to make sure you realized it wasn't "fixed"

And good luck with the winter months, you hibernate anyway, don't you?
