This forum is great - what a wealth of info. I like to ask for help. Well is drilled to 360 ft. Pump is going to be 1 - 1.5 hp at 10 gal. Run from well to pressure tank is about 150'. I want to fill a 1,700 gal inground tank which has 1" openings on end sides for in/out.
Cistern is approx. 60' from pressure tank.
1. 1" piping for in / out to cistern? Water to be used for drinking / fire fighting
2. How to make watertight seals for in / out piping?
3. Sump pump? 12 V (camping pump)?External pump for cistern pumping?
4. Filling pressure tank first - then the cistern?
5. Where do I cut in to start filling cistern with well pump?
6. How to shut off cistern filling? How to start pumping to fill?
Thanks in advance for suggestions and help.

You need to tell us what you are trying to do, so we can properly answer you.

1. Is the Cistern between the well and the pressure tank, or beyond.

2. Is the Cistern only used for fire fighting, that would make sense because you will have to treat it if it's for drinking. At 10 GPM you don't need to use it for drinking or irrigation.

3. What kind of tank is it, what are the opening made out of...

Hi Cow Rancher, Cistern is secondary for water storage and after the pressure tank (approx. 80' from press.tank underground). Primary is the pressure tank (house, watering animals etc). The cistern is 1700 gal plastic - openings on each end to be cut -approx. 1" diam. Cistern will be used for drink water in case of power outage / pump failure / emergency. That's why I also mentioned the 12V camper pump. Thanks for input/suggestions

Raben,
1. with the pressure tank being before the tank you would install a manual float valve on the inlet of the tank to shut the pressure tank off when the tank fills.
2. As for watertight seals, that can be done by using teflon tape or plumbers glue.
3. A 12v sump pump is very low flow and pressure. What is the purpose of pumping out of the tank?
4. If you are only using the underground cistern as an alternate supply than installing it before the pressure tank would be a problem only if you used a float switch to turn the well pump on and off.
5. Depends on if you want to run everything through your tank or out of it.
6. Manual float valve if your pressure tank is before the cistern, and a float switch if it's after.

All-in-all it depeneds on what your purpose for this tank is.

James,
floatswitch or floatvalve are things this layman has no clue about. have done plumbing - know to use teflon tape, putty and solder but don't know a thing about this topic of installing the cistern and pumping ones own water. What am I to do to get the pipes into and out of the cistern tank? Are there flanges to be used? Does the fill pipe go all the way to the bottom while the out-pipe is up off the bottom to avoid sucking dirt? This is an underground poly tank. Should the cistern come before the pressure tank or after: Cistern water is for emergency use if well pump fails or for fire fighting.
Or should the well water go into the cistern first and from there to the pressure tank to suplly the house? What are the experts saying, please?

Raben,

A float switch is an electrical weight that will hang down in the tank and when your water drops below the level you set it will kick on your pump as soon as the tank rises to the top it will kick off your tank. A float valve is a weighted ball that is attached to the inlet side of the tank sort of like the back of your toilet fills. The above ground tanks come with a 1 1/2 inch inlet and a 2 inch Female pipe threaded outlet allowing you to connect directly to the tank themselves. Underground tanks are different as they don't have any preinstalled fittings, but simply areas to make it easy for you to fit an d fill. Your best bet is well - holding tank - pump - pressure tank - house.

Thanks James - Any preference on one of the 2 options? My bulkheads do not have outlets cut out yet - guess I need bulkhead flanges to which then one attaches the PVC or flex pipe? As to the length inside the cistern: Fill-pipe length about a foot from the top of the tank? Suction pipe to 4" off the bottom OK? Will route in sequence as you advised. Thanks.
