Lately I have been looking at my above-ground gravity feed 500 gallon water tank and wondering if a good hurricane could knock it over.
In your experience, do hurricanes push full water tanks over? Or is it mainly flying debris we need to worry about?
Thanks. |

Um considering a hurricane can blow a piece of straw through a tree, I would have to say yes, it could. However, in regards to natural disasters there really is no way to completely prevent anything that could happen.

I think it's pretty obvious that flying debris would damage a tank, or a tree, but that's not what I asked. Do you guys up in the states have a simple solution to tip-over during a hurricane, such as anchoring the tanks to their base? There must be a U.S. building code on this, right? I'm not even sure that a full residential size tank (500 gal = 4000 lbs) would tip over, even in 100 mph wind.
Better yet, does WaterTanks.com sell a product for this purpose? (my initial searches didn't turn up anything) |

Seismic Restraints might work, the reason you don't see it listed is because the cost is determined based on the style and type of restraints needed. I have not had any experience, but I have heard of high winds taking empty tanks and sending them over a few miles away.

Thanks. Seismic restraints might not be such a bad plan here anyway, the ground does shake here from time to time. Will ask around. Thanks |

We had about 5 whole house RO systems in the three most recent hurricanes, each with a 500 gallon tank. A rather thin walled tank at that. Not one system or storage tank was damaged in the slightest way. Most are protected on at least one side.
On my house the fence around it looks a little rough but the tank was great. No power for two weeks but plenty of water!
