I am confused, should a Filox based sulfur/iron filter be placed before or after the water softener or does it really matter? I talked to tech support at one of the manufacturers, they said soft water should go into the filter; then I search the web and other people say to put the softener after (I am guessing so that iron doesn't go into the softener). Does it make much difference either way? Our plumbing is setup so that it is a lot easier to route the filter after the softener. If we did it before it, we'd have to cut and re-route a bunch of copper pipes. Thanks
Your filter goes in front of the softener as to not foul the exchange resins in the softener. BTW Filox requires high back wash rates which generally don't exist in residential situations; 30 gpm and your equipment may not be capable of this without commercial filter heads..
The placement of any oxidizing filter in relation to a softener depends exclusively on water chemistry, site parameters and sizing (by sizing I mean customer budget). Most softener resins can handle moderate amounts of Fe (clear water iron), but if you have sulfur in your water then the Filox goes upstream from the softener. Is the softener for removing traces of iron or hardness (how much hardness)... As you can see there are many questions are best asked and answered by a pro at the site. You donīt like the answers you get ask the next guy.
