I want to get 5000 gal of storage for well water. I have a slow well (about 3 gpm) and a 1500 gal tank on it now. When I am doing outside watering I can draw down that 1500 gal tank more than I want. I am also in a fire prone area and want some addition supply for fire fighting.
I want to get the storage below grade but I could dig a hole and line it with concrete blocks or something if direct bury is a problem.
I am on the coast of Washington about 75 miles South of Canada.
My question is what is the least expensive way to acquire this capacity. E.g., type and number of tanks, paying attention to shipping. |

Shipping is a large piece of the price of a tank. They do make direct bury poly tanks, however they are more expensive, you should do a price comparison between the above ground tanks with cinder block buried and direct bury tanks.
I direct buried two 5,000 gallon tanks thinking that when I back filled after I filled them, that it would kind of set up like dirt seems to do. I have a small indentation in the side of one of them when it gets empty, I will dig back out and lay cinder block to surround both of them, I'm guessing it is cheaper to do cinder block than the direct bury tank, the block for 2 5,000 gallon tanks is about $600.

Ask around the neighborhood if the locals build reinforced concrete cisterns (or concrete & cinderblock)and for how much. If there´s a local contractor who´ll build you one, get a quote and compare. In my neck of the woods it´s cheaper to build a concrete cistern than to buy plastic (above 1,500 Gals.)

| Poly tanks as the type (poly processing, Norwesco, etc) seen at water tanks.com are not meant for direct burial even if filled with water. I repair about 2-3 tanks per week and when we get these calls, we give people the bad news. Xerxes makes a tank for this purpose specificialy designed as a UST. |
