I have a jet pump with a shallow well. The pump gets to around 30lbs of pressure and never gets to the 40lbs to shut off. The house sat unoccupied for about a year. What could be causing the problem?
Also, there is a plastic thingy (looks like a glass bowl from and old carberator) about 1/3 the way down from the top that has a floating ball in it. What is this thing called and what is its purpose? A hose runs from it to the top of the pump near the pressure valve. When the pump is running the ball is suckked against the small hose and cuts off flow.
That little plastic thing Joe is an Air Control. It's purpose is to add a little air to the tank each pump cycle. To prevent waterlogging. In the case of the shallow well jet pump they worked quite well. Until bladder tanks came along anyway. The 30 pounds is kind of a mystery. If the jet were plugged, I doubt you would get more than 20 some pounds. However I would check the nozzle just in case. Could be some junk in one or two of the impeller volutes also. Usually the jet is the first thing to plug.
The Air Control has a plastic tube in the bottom that runs to the jet pump on the top. The plastic line is filled with water and there is a floating ball inside the plastic Air Control. When I turn the pump on, the floating ball gets sucked against the inlet to the plastic line from the Air Control. Is this normal? What is the purpose of the plastic tube?
